Linnelinjen turns 70!

On June 10, 1955, the H55 Exhibition opened in Helsingborg under radiant sunshine.

King Gustaf VI Adolf gave the opening speech, and a festive atmosphere filled the air as the crowds poured in. Over the following 80 days, the exhibition attracted more than one million visitors, who explored presentations on modern architecture, design, and the future of living. Running through the entire event was a clear vision: to inspire a simpler, better life with an emphasis on function and everyday aesthetics.

Linnelinjen - The linen line

During H55, the Linnelinjen was launched – a collaboration between NK’s Textile Chamber, Almedahls, and others. For the first time, printed patterns were offered in several different colorways – a groundbreaking idea for its time.

Among the collection was Perssons kryddskåp (Persson’s Spice Cabinet), a tea towel designed by Astrid Sampe, featuring a neat row of spice jars in a distinctive style. Also included was Sillsexa (now simply called Sill), designed by Marianne Nilsson. The pattern, filled with bottles, herring pieces, eggs, and cutlery, had a humorous tone that captured something deeply Swedish – the spirit of the smörgåsbord in printed textile form.

The tea towel Pinnebär was introduced a few years later but was also part of the Linnelinjen. Almedahls’ collection also includes the tea towel Gratulation by Astrid Sampe.

The collection played a key role in changing the perception of kitchen textiles, highlighting everyday items as part of good design. The Linen Line continued to grow with many new products until 1970.

Picknick – the birth of an icon

The now-classic Picknick pattern, designed by Marianne Westman, also premiered at H55. Its colorful decoration – featuring fruits, vegetables, and fish in simple, playful forms – drew great attention and represented something entirely new in Swedish design. The tableware was produced by Rörstrand until 1969.

In 2009, Picknick was given new life when Westman began a collaboration with Almedahls – a relaunch that introduced the beloved pattern to a new generation.
